Breakfast product labelling and transparency: How to adapt to new EU regulations with Macsa ID

Table of Contents

The European Union has recently revised the “Breakfast Directives,” introducing stricter standards for the composition, labeling, and naming of products such as honey, fruit juices, and jams. These measures aim to enhance transparency and combat food fraud by requiring producers to provide detailed information about the origin and ingredients of their products.

Key changes introduced by the breakfast directives

Honey

It is now mandatory to indicate all countries of origin for honey blends on the label, listed in descending order along with the percentage from each origin. This measure enhances transparency and helps prevent fraud in the honey market.

Fruit juices

Three new categories have been introduced:

  • “Fruit juice with reduced sugar content.”
  • “Fruit juice from concentrate with reduced sugar content.”
  • “Concentrated fruit juice with reduced sugar content.”

Additionally, labels can now include the statement “contains only naturally occurring sugars.”

Jams

The minimum fruit content in jams has been increased, which helps reduce the amount of added sugar and promotes healthier eating habits.
